I take my word back when I said that I won't be buying anything new this month. A woman who cried wolf, tell me I'm not the only one! But see, how can you not be stunned with a palette so exquisitely crafted?
Hourglass does know when to detonate a woman's kryptonite. Innovative, mod, abstract, the Modernist Eyeshadow Palette is truly a work of art. Available in seven variants, I ordered Graphite which features an interesting mix of ivory (matte), gold (shimmer), dark brown (matte), gunmetal (shimmer), and silver (shimmer).
Despite its uncontested beauty, this new collection immediately gained opposing views. Some said it's disappointingly powdery with major fallout party, some claimed it's manna from makeup haven. As a picky makeup enthusiast, the wow factor is not evident when you apply these eyeshadows dry. Gold has some fallouts, dark brown is dry, ivory is quite powdery. But here's the thing, matte is the hardest to formulate, I have not encountered a matte eyeshadow that is creamy to touch, let alone powder-free. Gunmetal is pigmented and my favorite from this palette. When applied wet, gold and silver look like foiled eyeshadows, that's when the not-so-wow becomes wowza! It also solved the fallout issue. Dark brown can be used to fill in eyebrows. Used wet with angled eyeshadow, it helps create flattering cat eyes.
I appreciate the art behind this beauty but if you're concerned with color dust transfers, the seamless flow can be a nuisance.
Just so you know the difference and understand the whole point of my application preference, here are dry and wet swatches of Graphite.
Applied over an eye primer using wet technique, these eyeshadows have commendable seven-hour staying power. It's a small palette that's quite lavish (0.035 oz, $58, Sephora) so if you're looking to splurge, I say proceed with caution. If you own any Naked palette, you will find the similarity of these shades to Foxy (Naked 2), Half-Baked (Naked 1 and 2), Verve (Naked 2), and Gunmetal (Naked 1).
Finally, here's moi featuring some Hourglass products (reviews are linked):
Ambient Lighting Powder (Diffused Light)
Femme Rouge Velvet Cream Lipstick (Vintage)
Ambient Lighting Blush (Mood Exposure)
Film Noir Mascara (Onyx)
I used all shades from the Graphite palette: ivory on brow bone and inner corner, gold on lids, dark brown on crease, gunmetal on outer corner and lower lash line, silver on inner lower lash line.
This looks absolutely stunning. I keep saying I don't need these but man oh man I want them. The pigmentation looks amazing wet too. I am swooning. Great look girl. Xxo
ReplyDeleteThanks Jamie. I know the feeling, temptation won against self-control, boo!
DeleteThat palette just looks like flowy curtains!
ReplyDeleteGreat observation!
DeleteIt's a beautiful palette, no doubt. I love the Hourglass powder and blush palettes I own, but I'm not completely sold on these shadow ones yet.
ReplyDeleteYeah, kind of "it's nice to have" vibe
DeleteI like the look of the shadows applied wet. It isn't a palette I'm running to get though.
ReplyDeleteYour eye look is beautiful. :) I love the look of these eye palettes, they look like silk rippling in the wind and I want all of them, just to look at. But I may pass on these, fifty-eight clams is a lot for me to spend on an eye palette that is so hit or miss. *le sigh*
ReplyDeleteOMG! Look at that sparkle!!
ReplyDeleteYour eye look is beautiful. I only like the pigmentation on the two shimmery shades - the gold and the gunmetal.
ReplyDeleteYou look stunning! I need these in Color Field and Exposure. Who cares for a bit of fallout and powder when the packaging is so good and the shadows look like vanilla, mango, blackcurrant and chocolate ice cream with sauce poured over them? #weirdodoesmakeup
ReplyDeleteYou are right, when they are foiled they are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis palette looks gorgeous on you! I'm surprised by how patchy the dark matte shade swatches. These palettes are definitely getting so much criticism for the fallout and powdery nature. That said, on your eyes it is absolutely stunning!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous though I'm not sure if I can focus on not blending the colors when picking up the shadow.
ReplyDeleteWow, stunner. This palette is like a work of art with the way it was done. Love it. Want it.
ReplyDeleteomggggg this is so so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOOOH! These are stunning when wet!!
ReplyDeleteAck... now I'm swooning over this and girl, you look fabulous.
ReplyDeleteAmazing palette, thanks for the review :)

I love your totally honest review of this. I doubt I'll be adding one one these palettes to my collection, but they sure are fun to look at :D
ReplyDeleteDying!! It's stunning. So beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I could handle to potential mess of the shades being all together in one "pan", but your swatches and eyelook are gorgeous looking!
ReplyDeleteThere is one of these palettes I just put on my Sephora wish list today. Although, 7 hour wear time isn't very good. :\
ReplyDeleteThe shadows look gorgeous wet, but I think the transferring of shadows with flowing design would bug me.
ReplyDeleteI always say I won't buy anything but when I see something pretty I gotta have it :D
ReplyDeleteI've never seen such a palette...like you said, a work of art! It's amazing!!
