4 Ways To Beat Holiday Bulge

It's easy to get sidetracked this time of the year, fitness-wise. I have the ultimate sweet tooth and the innumerable cookies, belgian chocolates, truffles and pies are the hardest to resist. But see, it's mind over matter. After all, don't we want to ring in the new year with positive mindset and healthy lifestyle? I won't speak here as Auntie Debbie Downer but rather your Tita Healtsista! We're in it to win it, zillas!

1. Exercise, sweat it out. Don't let the colder months drag your butt to couch for hours. Hit the treadmill, run, do yoga, dance zumba, go to the gym if you may. Stay active and don't use the weather as a silly excuse to procrastinate. Why start in January when you can do it now?

2. Eat in moderation. Again, the critical part of holiday merry-eating is willpower. At my age now, I don't believe and advocate any fad diets. I shared my weight loss journey and tips from this 2011 post. Sure you can eat your mama's paella, sister's braised ham, uncle's laulau (pork wrapped in taro leaf) or friend's napoleon cake. Eat but don't feast. Meaning, practice portion plate. Ideally, half of your plate should be vegetables/fruits. Fill but don't overfill. Stop when you're full, not when you are overfull. Will Power is your new best friend (I'm on my 6th month as a vegetarian, thanks to Will P).

3. Drink water. This cold season also takes a toll on our skin, making it dry and flaky. While moisturizers help, there is nothing better than drinking at least eight glasses of H20 a day. If you're attending parties left and right, replace soda with water or drink one glass before a meal. It makes you feel full thus eliminating chances of overindulgence. Gluttony, kick it for good.

4. Share the love. Instead of forcing yourself to eat all leftovers, share food with your guests with to-go boxes or even better, drive to a shelter and extend your generosity. Little act of kindness is rewarded multifold. It may not be all the time but it will be great each time.
